Tamara was walking home alone at night, her long black hair becoming soaked. Her eyes were so dark a shade of brown that they almost looked black. The town hadn’t seen a storm quite like this in ages! It had knocked all the power out of the entire town.

Tamara had been at her friends house. Sadly, her friend’s family’s car had been in the shop that day, and Tamara had insisted upon getting home that night. Walking home reminded Tamara about a legend the town had.

On the night when the winds are howling, darkness falls upon our little town. In this darkness, the demons come from the deepest depths of their domain searching for a girl whose soul they will steal. Their devilish charms will lure even the strongest willed girl into their web of deceit, a web which she will never return. If a young girl should wander the streets on a night such as this, a demon will find her. Lured in she will be, and never seen again. No trace. Almost as if she was never there at all…

Or so the legend goes. A chill ran up Tamara’s spine as she recalled it. It certainly seemed like something like that could happen, especially on a night like this!

“Mind if I walk with you? You seem to be getting wet.” Came a coaxing, masculine voice.

Tamara whipped around to find a man with short, straight black hair and eyes just like hers. For some reason, those eyes unnerved her.

“If you share that umbrella.” She replied. Tamara has never been above accepting help from strangers, even if it wasn’t very bright.

The mystery man smiled. “But of course.”

She smiled at him and they began walking side by side.

“You look to be about my age, why haven’t I seen you at my school?”

The man shrugged. “I’m homeschooled and don’t get out that much, Tamara.”

Tamara nodded. “I guess that makes sense. I don’t see you at any of the beaches, either.”

He chuckled. “I’m sure you’ve noticed how very pale I am.”

Tamara nodded again. She had definitely noticed how pale he was. “I take it you burn very easily?” The man nodded. Soon, the two were right on the street near her house.

“Wait a second, how did you know where I lived?” Tamara demanded, sounding a little disturbed.

The man blinked. “I didn’t.”

Tamara blushed, embarrassed. “Oh.” They kept on walking until they came to Tamara’s house.

“Well, this is me.” She stated. Then, something occurred to the girl. He had never given her his name. “By the way, I never caught your name.”

“Oh, right. I’m sorry. My name is Zerein.” Zerein replied.

Tamara raised an eyebrow. “That’s an odd name.” Then, another thing occurred to her. She had never told him her name...and yet he had known. Well...this is a small island. It’s quite possible that he already knew of me. Besides, something about him seemed so...so….she couldn’t even describe it.

“Well, I wish I could stay out and talk, but I really should go inside.” She stated.

“Why do you need to go inside?” Zeirein asked. His eyes locked onto mine.

“I need to...go inside...I have to go...to bed.” Tamara responded, transfixed by those eyes. Were they red?

“Why not stay with me? Give me your everything...your very soul.” He asked again. Wordlessly, Tamara nodded. The man smiled a sickeningly sweet smile and offered her his hand. She took it, and they both disappeared. She was never seen again.

Just another little short story.
